Il fastidio di tradurmi da me, e la ripugnanza di farmi tradurre da un estraneo nella mia propria lingua, hanno ritardato sin'ora questa pubblicazione, per quanto da me desiderata. Trovato finalmente un traduttore, che non era l'autore e che non era neppure un estraneo, sono lieto di offrire questo piccolo libro al pubblico italiano. Questo piccolo libro racconta in succinto e indaga uno degli episodi più grandiosamente tragici della nostra storia della nostra civiltà. Sebbene l'Europa sia oggi molto più ricca colta, potente, che 17 secoli fa, credo non sia del tutto inutile, in questi tempi difficili, ritornare per un momento a questa grande esperienza del passato. Essa può mostrarci alcuni pericoli, che minacciano la nostra civiltà, come già distrussero la civiltà antica. Con questo spirito il libro è stato scritto, e con questo spirito spero che sarà letto.
