Photos of Mars were retouched and rotated to keep the viewer from noticing that the polar light-caps were on the nightside. Now NASA has detected that Mars has wet rocks near the poles, not vast fields of ice glowing in the dark.

The cover photographs of Mars were taken in 1909 and 1902 and appeared in books by George Camow and Marshall B. Gardner. The protruding polar brightness was explained by Gamow as an ice cap, and by Gardner as the light of an internal sun shining through a polar hole.
