About This Book
The events are set out not just from a highcommand perspective but from grass-roots, withall the human suffering, trauma, compassionand even survival. There is real compassion andhuman understanding, especially in Bosnia, withsufferings of all sides. The writing is attractive and very readable, modest, self-effacing, honest, with hints of P GWodehouse(!), and intimate. Readers will feelinvolved and brought into author's confidence -and this is a gift of good authorship. There are deep and important themes apartfrom immediate policy and action, notably thenature of war and warfare as a fundamentalhuman condition, the real-life horror ofwar, and self-sacrifice. And examination ofleadership is very impressive, with the trustwhich is vital to success. A chapter on 'surprise'in political and military history is fascinatingfor historians. Technology is a vital theme andcovered for the lay reader to grasp and evencyber technology. The chapters on relationswith other arms, government bodies includingthe MOD and distinguished colleagues, and allranks, are highly informative and reveal what tosome is a secret world.
