Decorative Pillows

Decorative pillows—or throw pillows, as they are sometimes called—are possibly the single most effective element for adding color, pattern, texture, and style to an interior. They are incredibly versatile and can be constructed in an endless number of shapes and styles.
  • Pillows can be strictly decorative or they can serve vital functions, such as neck, arm, or lumbar support.
  • Choose a pillow insert that will provide the appropriate look and support for each pillow.
Down and feather inserts are comfortable and luxurious and can be shaped to a desired form. They will compress with use and must be fluffed to bring them back to their original shape.
Polyester fiber inserts are firm and will retain their original shape without fluffing. They are less malleable than feather-down inserts and may compact and lose volume over time.
  • All pillow inserts will eventually compact over time and lose some of their volume. Over-stuffing pillows at the outset can ensure that they remain plump longer and help avoid loose, saggy-looking covers.
  • Pillow inserts should be removed and cleaned once a year. This will help maintain their shape and prolong the life of the pillow.
  • Pillow covers should always be constructed with a hidden zipper or other type of professional closure unless there is a specific reason not to include it.
  • Adding a bit of loose fill or batting in the corners of your pillows, in addition to a pillow form, will produce sharp, plump corners.
  • Many pillow insert manufacturers and suppliers offer custom sizes and shapes. You do not have to settle for standard options.
