1. In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful2
2. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds,3
3. The Compassionate, the Merciful,
4. Master of the Day of Judgement,
5. Only You do we worship, and only You do we implore for help.
6. Lead us to the right path,
7. The path of those You have favoured Not those who have incurred Your wrath or have gone astray.

1.That is, the opening section or chapter of the Qur’an. It has various other names including Umm al-Kitab or the Quintessence of the Book and the Chapter of Prayer, because it is repeated in every one of the five daily prayers. It is also recited on many important occasions.
2.This verse is one of the most recurrent verses in the Qur’an. Muslims recite it at the commencement of their daily activities.
3.That is, the whole of creation.

SĂťrah 2. Al-BaqarahPart 1

SĂťrat Al-Baqarah,
(The Cow) 2

image
In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
1. Alif, Lam, Mim.4
2. This is the Book which cannot be doubted and is a guidance to the God-fearing,
3. Those who believe in the Unseen, perform the prayer and give freely from what We provided for them,
4. And who believe in what was revealed to you and was revealed before you and firmly believe in the life to come.
5. Those are guided by their Lord, and those are the prosperous.
6. Those who have disbelieved, whether you warn them or not, they will not believe.
image
7. Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing; their sight is dimmed and a terrible punishment awaits them.
8. There are some who say: “We believe in Allah and the Last Day;” but they are not real believers.
9. They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, but they deceive none other than themselves, though they are not aware of that.
10. In their hearts is a sickness; so Allah has increased their sickness. A painful punishment awaits them because of their lying.
11. And when they are told: “Do not sow mischief in the land”, they say: “We are only doing good.”
image
12. It is they who make mischief, but they are unaware of that.
13. And when they are told: “Believe as the others have believed”, they say: “Shall we believe as the fools5 have believed?” It is they who are the fools, though they do not know it.
14. And when they meet the believers, they say: “We believe”, but when they are alone with their devils6 they say: “We are with you;7 we were only mocking.”
15. Allah mocks them and gives them the latitude to wander aimlessly in their intransigence.8
16. Those are the people who traded away guidance for error; but their trade made no gains and they have not found the right way.
17. They are like one who kindled a fire, but when it lit all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in total darkness unable to see;
image
18. Deaf, dumb, blind; they shall never return.9
19. Or like those who in the midst of a cloudburst from the sky accompanied by darkness, thunder and lightning put their fingers in their ears to guard against thunderbolts for fear of death. And Allah encompasses10 the disbelievers.
20. The lightning almost takes away their sight; when it flashes they...
