Die mit dem Internet verbundenen Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien werden mit zunehmender Selbstverständlichkeit zur Unterstützung betrieblicher und zwischenbetrieblicher Problemstellungen herangezogen - Diese Aussage gilt zumindest für den Bereich der großen Unternehmen und Konzerne. Unter den kleinen und mittelständischen Unternehmen finden sich bislang dagegen vergleichsweise wenig Beispiele für eine erfolgreiche Realisierung von E-Business-Vorhaben. Zudem ist eine gewisse "Entmystifizierung" der Internet-Technologien und ihrer betrieblichen Nutzeffekte zu beobachten, sodass die Einschätzungen der mit dem E-Business verbundenen Potenziale inzwischen vielerorts deutlich nüchterner eingestuft werden als noch vor wenigen Jahren. Umso wichtiger scheint die Notwendigkeit fundierter Kenntnisse der im E-Business-Umfeld diskutierten Technologien und Konzepte, um zukünftige Fehlsteuerungen aufgrund einer übertriebenen optimistischen oder auch übertrieben pessimistischen Bewertung ihrer Leistungsfähigkeit zu vermeiden. Ziel dieses Buches ist es, die betriebswirtschaftlichen Implikationen und die IV-technische Unterstützung des E-Business systematisch aufzuarbeiten. Dabei stehen insbesondere die Belange der kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. Es wird somit dem Umstand Rechnung getragen, dass für viele kleine und mittelständische Unternehmen das Themenfeld noch immer mit einer großen Unsicherheit behaftet ist.
