About This Book

The Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) is a unique, single-subject, practical and theory-based individual competition in the field of physics. It was developed to provide young Asian students with a platform to display their physics knowledge. It is the celebration of the best in pre-university physics.

Each year, for about one week, pre-university students from across Asia gather and test their theory and practical skills in physics. This book contains question papers in both theory and experiment and their solutions together with description of various activities of the 15th Asian Physics Olympiad held in Singapore from 11th to 18th May 2014. The book will serve as a valuable source of interesting and challenging experimental and theoretical topics for young physicists worldwide.

Dear APhO 2014 Participants,
Welcome to the 15th Asian Physics Olympiad held at the National University of Singapore. Participation in this Olympiad is indeed an opportunity for all of us to meet, interact, network, compete, and also to learn from each other. It is the spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play that has inspired and motivated all of us to join the Olympiad family. Let us make best use of it and enjoy every aspect of Olympiad.
You are in a city that is home to many cultures. For you to experience Singapore, the Organizing Committee has lined up several exciting educational, sightseeing and cultural programs. It is your turn to enjoy every aspect of this; particularly Singapore’s cultural diversity by tasting the wide variety of food and experiencing different languages, entertainment and cultural activities. Your exposure to Singapore’s state-of-the-art research facilities and vibrant student life would hopefully help you in making your future academic plans.
With the participation of 27 teams representing most of Asia, the current APhO 2014 can claim to have attracted a large number of teams and also participants. Thank you for being instrumental in history making.
During the upcoming one week, student-contestants will test their intellect by answering theory and experimental papers. Leaders will be spending day and night in discussing and finalizing the question papers, translating to other languages where necessary, correcting the answer scripts, and finalizing the medal winners. We hope it to be a rewarding experience for everyone concerned.
Wish you a pleasant and memorable APhO 2014.
Prof. B.V.R. Chowdari
Chairman, Organizing Committee APhO 2014

WHAT DOES EACH OF US HAVE TO SAY?

As the APhO participants touch down to the Little Red Dot, we set out to get to know more about our new friends by asking them:
What’s a word or phrase that could describe how you’re feeling?

Team KYRGYZSTAN is amused by Singapore’s tall buildings
Datkabek : “Excited”
Ahror : “Amazed”
Uran : “Looking forward to the city trips (and see more skyscrapers!)”
Musael : “Wet (humid)”
Seeing that Singapore is 95% concrete jungle and Kyrgyzstan is 95% mountains (inaccurate figures, of course), we understand their fond interest in the met-

Team RUSSIA tells us more about themselves Anton likes Maths, and only started studying Physics two years ago (translation: he’s smart!). He finds Singapore too warm and humid, but likes his room in UTown.
Alexey Daniliuk likes to play basketball but recently, he doesn’t have much time to play anymore. He also likes studying Physics.
Alexander likes to play table tennis and listen to music.
The APhO 2014 participants are definitely a diverse bunch of talented, hardworking and very interesting people. Look out for our friendly reporters as they continue to find out more about the students in the upcoming week, and stand a chance to be featured right here on this newsletter! Good luck for the Olympiad and enjoy your time in Singapore! We hope you have a wonderful experience and unforgettable memories.

GEOGRAPHY LESSONS!

And there we thought schools been left behind -- but... all physicist are well-rounded people. And we never miss out on an opporunity to learn!
According to our friends, these are the “places of interest” in their homeland. Next on our to--do list: Visit these places!

The students from Team Kyrgyzstan unanimously and instantly agreed on the same place – Lake Issyk Kul. Pictures alone do not do justice to its breath-taking view. The team touts this lake as the most beautiful place in the country, set amidst the backdrop of towering mountain terrain and coupled with a wide range of attractions. One of the students from Kyrgyzstan, Nurbek Baizakov, calims that everyone who visits “must have a swim” in the lake. This is definitely a lovely place to consider for our next holiday destination!
