Das europäische Judentum wurde während des Zweiten Weltkrieges weitestgehend vernichtet, Überlebende mussten außerhalb ihrer angestammten Regionen neue Heimstätten finden. So war es nach dem Krieg ein Gebot der Stunde, das Bild der aschkenasisch-jüdischen Kultur nachzuzeichnen und die Verbreitung des Jiddischen in Europa zu rekonstruieren, solange es noch durch Information bezeugt werden konnte.

Für dieses Unterfangen steht der »Language and Culture Atlas of Ashkenazic Jewry« (LCAAJ), der Ende der 50er Jahre von Uriel Weinreich ins Leben gerufen wurde und seit dessen frühzeitigem Tod 1967 von Marvin Herzog geleitet wird. Seit November 1991 wird der LCAAJ von einem Herausgeber-Kollegium ediert unter der Leitung von Marvin Herzog (New York). Die Explorationen des LCAAJ gründen auf Erhebungen zur aschkenasisch-jüdischen Kultur und jiddischen Sprache in Europa, die mit Überlebenden und Emigranten hauptsächlich in Israel und den USA durchgeführt wurden. In seinen Forschungsaspekten bündelt der LCAAJ das weitreichende Spektrum der Weinreichschen Beiträge zur Erforschung des Jiddischen, Überlegungen zur Theorie der Mehrsprachigkeit, zur strukturellen Dialektologie und zur Methodik einer 'Kulturgeographie aus der Ferne'.
