La obra plantea la naturaleza compleja y transdisciplinar de los problemas en la educación matemática, afirmando la necesidad de adoptar una posición epistemológica explícita y militante. Se presentan los fundamentos epistemológicos que orientan el diseño de situaciones de enseñanza de los conceptos matemáticos y la adopción de las unidades de análisis en la investigación sobre el uso de las calculadoras, en el marco de la teoría de situaciones de Cuy Brousseau y su relación con los conceptos de la epistemología genética de Piaget y la mediación sociocultural. Además, se familiariza al lector con la epistemología del error y los obstáculos cognitivos.
